What better way to enjoy the changing autumn leaves than a hike on a Technicolor trail? “Walking over the rough terrain on a hike trains your stability and strengthens your lower body,” says James Thomas, certified personal trainer and studio director at THE Mills. A walk in the woods can increase your heart rate, improve your mood and reduce Stress and anxiety — a big plus in the run-up to Christmas. Try a dog-friendly hike, explore a national park with the kids, or mix things up with a city hike.

Boring chore or engaging workout? “When the leaves fall and turn our lawns and sidewalks into an autumnal Orange, raking and sagging the leaves can be a great workout for the whole body, helping in a preventive way to reduce the potential winter weight,” says Jack McNamara, certified personal trainer at Train Fitness. Follow these tips to enjoy the benefits of core strengthening and avoid health-issue:

Try to keep your posture as straight as possible.
Periodically alternate between left and right raking.
Lift the leaf bags with your knees and legs instead of bending over or bending your back.

Ahh, the joy of the Man-Horse bond. Galloping through the fields on the back of a horse is another autumn activity that might surprise you with its calorie-burning benefits. “Horseback riding is a good workout for the abdominal muscles and thighs,” says Jody Braverman, certified personal trainer and body nutrition specialist. According to a 2015 study by researchers at Texas A&M University, for greater calorie burning, consider developing a more demanding gait, such as the long trot and gallop, or working on skills such as reins and cutting.

If you have a lot of wood to cut, you will reap the benefits of an excellent all-round cardiovascular workout with impressive calorie burning. “When you cut wood, your body coordinates several muscle groups through different planes of movement, so you need to stabilize and tense your legs, abs, glutes, core, lower and upper back, chest, shoulders and arms,” says McNamara. No Wood? No problem. For a similar workout, try using a cable crossing device at your local gym or practicing your swing with a medicine ball.

There is nothing like driving to a farm with family and friends, picking pumpkins and filling bushels with apples for homemade desserts. When you walk, grab, turn, squat and carry weights, you’re not just taking in the scenery and having fun — you’re also doing weight training, says Thomas. These multiplanar movements move your body forward, from side to side and up and down, which can help you improve your range of motion and avoid health-issue in the future.

Getting lost in a corn maze may not be the best calorie finisher on this List, but it is an easily accessible way to increase your step count and improve your overall health. “To meet the challenge, just increase the pace and pump your arms,” says Braverman. Depending on how long you do Power Walk, you could burn a lot of calories — and even more if it’s haunted and you end up running in front of monsters or a stranger with a chainsaw.

Another great way to burn calories and have a healthier Halloween is to walk around your neighborhood to pick up decorations or do tricks or treats with your children. “Towards the end of the month, Trick or Treat can offer a large number of steps,” says Thomas. “I remember walking almost two miles of lawns to hit as many houses as possible.”A higher number of steps could also contribute to a better sleep at night when you have returned home with your Transport.
